The Original Chesterfield - English Furniture
The origin of the name of this typically English furniture is subject to different stories. The following anecdote is the most likely: In 1773, Philip Dormer Stanhope - English writer, statesman and 4th Earl of Chesterfield - received visitors at his deathbed. He spoke to his loyal servant:
“Give Mr. Dayrolles a chair”.
The servant, confused by his master's imminent end, insisted that the visitor take the chair he had just been sitting on when he left. This chair is probably the predecessor of the Chesterfield (named after the Earl of Chesterfield) as we know it today.
